The Southern African language of Nluu and the Kenyan lanugauge of Yakunte are on the verge of extinction, with only one remaining fluent speaker for each. However, Stephen Leeriman, believed to be the last fluent speaker of Yakunte, and Ouma Esau Katrina, the only surviving fluent speaker of Nluu, share a common mission - saving the dying languages - with each racing against time to achieve the goal. UNESCO has classified Yakunte, spoken by East Africa's Yaaku community, and Nluu, spoken by Southern Africa's San people, as critically endangered. Stephen Leeriman, popularly known as the Yaaku 'professor,' and South Africa's Ouma Esau Katrina, who has earned an honorary doctorate for her efforts, are determined in their separate missions to preserve the Yakunte and Nluu languages. The world loses nine languages annually, according to UNESCO. As parents fail to pass the languages down to their children, the last speakers usually go to their graves with the dialects.
