/ theorthobox Follow me on Twitter! @theorthobox Welcome back to YOU Can Beatbox. Today we’re starting the beginning of a 3 part mini series on lip rolls. Before we start the sound, I’d like to recommend that you guys follow me over on Twitter @TheOrthobox. That’s where I’ll be taking questions for the Question and Answer videos I’ll be starting and is another way to connect with you guys so tweet at me all you want. But back to lip rolls. This sound has really been gaining popularity recently, with beatboxers like Ibarra, Ball Zee, D-Low and others rising on the scene. And of course I have to give a shout out to Napom from the US for taking 2nd place at the world champions with his signature lip roll style. On to the sound, the lip roll is a simple yet dynamic sound. It goes a little like this [demo] and can be expanded to a whole set like this [demo] but we’ll be learning the basic technique today. Step one of learning the lip roll is being able to do a bass drum out of the side of your mouth. I’ll go with the left side. The lip roll has two components so once you have the side bass drum down, you’re halfway there. But, just like we learned way back in the 4th tutorial that you can do the bass drum without breathing and just use lip power, that’s what you want to do here. The second part is somewhat like a bass drum using the side of your mouth but instead of pushing out air, you just suck air into your mouth. Its similar to the classic sound people make for babies [demo] but on the side of your mouth. And keep in mind you don’t breath or pull air into your lungs. So we have the two parts down [demo]. I find that it helps to physically move your jaw up and down but whatever gets you a result you like works. And to get the classic lip roll, you just do this fast repeatedly. So now, lets do two practice beats Bpb B t t B Pf t t B B B Pf t t x2 BpbpB B Pf B B Pf x2 That about wraps up the most basic lip roll and we’ll be continuing with more advance techniques. Comment below with questions, comments or tutorial requests. Thanks for watching, this has been YOU can beatbox and next time we’ll be learning how to do an inward lip roll [demo].
