Welcome to Waste Management's newest facility in Southern California - the Azusa MRF. Opened in October 2013, this facility takes in recyclables from as far west as Simi Valley, as far east as Moreno Valley, and as far south as El Cajon. This place is one of the largest processing facilities in North America, handling about 16,500-17,000 tons annually. Along with the MRF, this facility also houses a transfer station where trucks dump green waste, trash, and C&D. We start out with a tour of the MRF with operations manager Marc Harismendy. He took us around the entire area and explained the process from tipping floor to baler. Azusa handles much of WM's recycling needs throughout Southern California, and also takes in some material from other haulers throughout the San Gabriel Valley. Some of the companies that dump here include Burrtec, Universal Waste Systems (UWS), Waste & Recycling Services, AAA Rubbish, and most recently, the City of Clarement. Most of them come here either to unload the final load of the day or on rare occasions, but it's not uncommon to see their trucks leaving Azusa. There are many different sort lines here to deal with all the material brought in - my personal favorites were definitely the HDPE and aluminum can lines with the technology used to sort those items out. Afterwards, we watched some of the trucks pull in and out of the facility. Lots of familiar faces (and lots of "Think Green, Think Clean" trucks), so that's always fun. Lately, it's been pretty neat with all the garbage trucks from different companies. It's not uncommon to see convoys of WM and Burrtec trucks pulling out in the afternoons. Oh yeah, and if you're wondering why Joe (driver of 103860) said, "Welcome to California", it's because the last time I saw him, I told him Kevin was in Utah, so that was his little way of teasing Kevin haha Huge thanks to all of the staff at Waste Management - Azusa MRF for the great tour, especially Marc Harismendy, & another big thanks to Teri Muse for setting up the tour for us. Thanks to Kevin and my brother for tagging along on the tour!
