I swear that if he never existed, we would sense a lack in the world of comedy, like that planet in the solar system that astronomers say Ought to be there. For me he is The Master" - Dick Cavett (1972) GROUCHO!! The One. The Only. Perhaps my favourite person to have ever existed (that I've never met). The impact he's had on my life- the hard times he's gotten me through. It's strange to think that this person, who died 15+ years before I was born, has been there for me when I've needed him most these last few years. Whether it's the Marx Brothers films, or a random episode of "You Bet Your Life"- I always know when I'm down, Groucho can cheer me up. There's just never been anyone like him before and there never will be again. I'm so excited that I've finally made a tribute to this remarkable comedian and I only hope I've done him justice. The hardest thing about making this video was narrowing down what to include and what not to include. Honestly, this video could've gone for 20 minutes, packed full of quotes. In the end I tried to choose an assortment of quotes and clips that best represents what I love most about Groucho. There are little things in the video that might only appeal to my sense of humour- but I wanted to show moments that I love most and have brought me the most joy when watching his work. The vast majority of Groucho's film career is accounted for, as is "You Bet Your Life" and some of his television appearances (though not as many as I would have liked). I also wanted to include some home movie footage, to make it more personable and give the viewer a sense of the man. I wanted to create something that perfectly represented this human being (not only the persona) and what he brought to the world- hopefully that comes across in the decisions I've made and the video itself. Basically, I hope it doesn't suck. As for film recommendations, when it comes to the Marx Brothers filmography, you really can't go wrong with any of their Paramount films. "The Cocoanuts" (1929), "Animal Crackers" (1930), Monkey Business (1931), Horse Feathers (1932) and Duck Soup (1933) are all excellent. Their MGM films are a little more hit and miss- but "A Night at the Opera" (1935) and "A Day at the Races" (1937) are both amongst their very best films. My personal favourite Marx Brothers film is "Animal Crackers". I just think it's the funniest film, it's Groucho's best performance (and subsequently best character) and it's the closest we'll ever get to seeing what a Marx Brothers Broadway stage production would've been like. That being said, if you're going to explore their filmography, you should go through it chronologically. Unfortunately Groucho's solo films in no way compare to the films he made with his brothers- they're only worth seeing if you're a massive fan of the man himself. "You Bet Your Life" is also a lot of fun if you're looking for something quick and easy to watch. Most of the episodes are available on YouTube and it's a really fun television game show that Groucho hosts to perfection. The format of the show is secondary to Groucho talking to his contestants- which is always a real treat.
