I’ve always thought I’d make a great dog dad, so when a friend asked me to look after Maya the pug for a few days, I thought, why not combine it with a dream adventure? Maya’s an outdoorsy pug, very used to camping and even bike riding, so she was the perfect side kick for my Brompton bikepacking trip to a Scottish loch. Scotland has been calling me. I just want to try wild camping beside a loch. After scouting maps for a loch close to a city with accessible, relatively easy cycle paths, I found Loch Venachar—peaceful, scenic, and reachable without strenuous climbs. Since camping restrictions ease in October, we were all set for a cozy Autumn adventure. So with my Brompton, camping gear, and Maya in tow, I set out. But just how easy is bikepacking with a dog? Follow along as we journey through Scotland’s beauty and discover the challenges of wild camping with a pug.
