Berlins neues Denkmal! Erst im vergangenen Jahr feierten wir unser 100-jähriges Bühnenjubiläum, nun wird der neue Friedrichstadt-Palast Berlin, der 1984 als letzter Repräsentationsbau der DDR vor der Wende eröffnete, unter Denkmalschutz gestellt. Als zeitgenössischer Plattenbau mit Anklängen an Jugendstil und Art Déco stellt der Palast laut Landesdenkmalamt Berlin gleichzeitig den Höhe- und Endpunkt der Epoche der DDR-„Paläste“ dar. „Viele aus unserem heutigen Ensemble wurden in der DDR geboren und haben ihr Berufsleben dem Palast gewidmet. Was wir heute sind, verdanken wir auch ihnen. Die heutige Unterschutzstellung ehrt die Schöpfer, die Baukollektive und ebenso diese Biographien", sagte unser Intendant Berndt Schmidt anlässlich der Feierstunde im Foyer des Palastes. Just last year, we celebrated 100 years of stage history here at the Palast. Now, the new Friedrichstadt-Palast Berlin, which opened in 1984 as the final representative construction project of the German Democratic Republic (GDR) before the fall of the Berlin Wall, is being placed under monument protection. According to Berlin’s State Office for the Preservation of Historical Monuments, as a contemporary prefab with elements reminiscent of the art nouveau and art déco styles, the Palast represents the heyday of the GDR era of “palace” construction and also marks its end. “Many of those currently in our Ensemble were born in East Germany and have dedicated their professional lives to the Palast. They have helped to make us what we are today. The monument status accorded today honours the creators and building collective as well as these biographies,” our General Director Berndt Schmidt said during the ceremony held in the Palast’s foyer.
