Just before this sortie, I had tested the high altitude performance (40 kft+) of the R-27R vs the AIM-7M. Just like at ~20 kft, the slightly faster R-27R will tend to hit the target at "max. crank" range (i.e. the range at which the R-27R can be shot at a target cranking at 60-70 deg. and just hit) before the AIM-7M of the target does nothing or cranks only to one side and maintains altitude. At 45 kft, this is ~20 nm. If, however, the target cranks fully to one side and then the other, the AIM-7M tends to hit its target first while the R-27R might not even reach its target at all due to energy bleed. The margin is very slim, however so an F-15 or F/A-18 pilot should maximize altitude and speed over the enemy on the first shot.
