Bieke Depoorter and Susan Meiselas | Aperture Conversations

On June 14th, 2018, Aperture Foundation, in collaboration with Magnum Photos, was pleased to present a night of conversation between Susan Meiselas and Bieke Depoorter. Meiselas and Depoorter, who both joined the agency in their early twenties, discussed the nature of their work as documentary photographers—exploring both the challenging and rewarding aspects of this field. Both photographers are known for working intimately with their subjects, immersing themselves in new environments, and developing unique approaches in their long-term projects. Two photographers of different generations, they discussed the changing ways in which photographers capture today’s social and political landscape in the US and worldwide. Susan Meiselas (born in Baltimore, 1948) received her BA from Sarah Lawrence College and her MA in visual education from Harvard University. For her groundbreaking work, she has received the Robert Capa Gold Medal for her project in Nicaragua (1979); Leica Award for Excellence (1982); Engelhard Award from the Institute of Contemporary Art (1985); the Hasselblad Foundation Photography Prize (1994); Cornell Capa Infinity Award (2005); and most recently the Harvard Arts Medal (2011). In 1992, she was named a MacArthur Fellow. Meiselas joined Magnum Photos in 1976 and is a cofounder of the Magnum Foundation. Bieke Depoorter (born in Kortrijk, Belgium, 1986) joined Magnum Photos at the young age of twenty-five and became a full member in 2016. She received a master’s degree in photography at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Ghent in 2009. She has won several awards for her documentary projects, including the Magnum Expression Award in 2009. Her previous publications include Ou Menya (2012) and I am about to call it a day (2014).
