Weipa is the home of Pennefather Beach, a magnificent 30 km 4X4 beach drive boasting virgin sands, crystal waters, unrivalled fishing and a fascinating history. Day 23 and the skies are blue all the way to the horizon. We head north from the beautiful Weipa Camping Ground and over the longest single lane road rail bridge in the southern hemisphere. As the crow flies our destination at Duyfken Point is less than 20 km west, but Landcruisers don’t float so well in open sea. After navigating the bauxite mines the road heads to the Wenlock River. At about the 35 km mark you take the dirt road left (west) to Pennefather Beach. This is easy traveling, but drop your tyre pressures to 16-18 psi for beach driving. The beach run is amazing, being composed largely of broken sea shells (billions of them) and coral. Turn right (north) for the Pennefather camping area, or left for Duyfken Point 30 km to the south. This is where the Dutch ship Duyfken claimed the first European sighting of the Australian coast in 1606. This was 10 years before Dirk Hartog in Western Australia and an amazing 164 years before Captain James Cook sailed up the east coast. The Dutch never claimed Australia. We found this fascinating. Although we had not planned it, we had managed to visit the only four landing points for Caption Cook when he claimed Australia for England (Sydney, Seventeen Seventy, Cooktown and Possession Island) PLUS we stumbled upon the first ever European sighting. This is what 4X4 overlanding is all about – adventure, discovery, fun, unspoilt nature, the unexpected. After some searching, we finally spotted the wreckage of a WWII fighter plane just north of Duyfken Point. You will find it in two separate locations (it broke up badly upon impact) on the upper level well above the high tide mark. There is a raised narrow section of flat land between the beach and the bush. Look for bushes that have grown up around the plain wreckage. We top this episode off with a very interesting tour of the bauxite mines. Weipa has so much to offer. Stay a week. Pennefather? Wow. This is highly recommended. Do it. Have fun.
