The chief minister of Tamil Nadu K Palanisami has announced that Chennai, and 3 other districts will be placed under ‘maximized restricted lockdown’ from June 19th to June 30th. This is because Tamil Nadu has seen a sharp spike in the number of COVID-19 cases, crossing 44,000. More than 70% of these are from Chennai alone. This intense 12-day lockdown will be implemented in Chennai, Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, and Tiruvallur. This decision was taken by the cabinet after the covid-19 situation in the state began spiralling out of control. After Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu is the worst affected state in India. In this new lockdown, no relaxations will be permitted even on Sundays, public transport, private transport, taxis, and public places will all be shut down. Only those plying for essential services will be allowed. Restaurants will only be permitted to sell takeaway food items. India currently has over 3.32 lakh coronavirus cases, with 11,000 cases added just in the past 24 hours. Experts warn that the peak cases could be reached in mid-November.
