"Shimmering, Warm & Bright" - Echoes from the North-East This is a never-before-released music video, filmed by Norwegian Broadcasting in a historic house in Oslo’s West End, along with vast landscapes filmed by Morten Skallerud. This song blends Arctic ambient textures with Eastern tribal rhythms, evoking the vastness of the northern steppes and spiritual traditions of the East. The story behind: The song was recorded in two different demo versions back in 1991. One version followed traditional chord changes, while the other—created more for fun—was built around a single chord that ran through the entire track. The foundation of the song came from a sample Nils recorded from a TV documentary about Bhutan. He only managed to catch the final few seconds of the program, pressing the cassette recorder just in time. That brief snippet became the sample—looped and altered in various tempos throughout the song. Anneli began improvising a topline, and almost instantly sang the words:"Shimmering, warm and bright, shimmering, warm, on the opposite side"—which became the chorus. As Nils picked up his mandola and layered in new instrumentation and grooves, Anneli tapped into a vivid memory from her youth. She recalled an eerie experience from when she was twelve, when a friend came for a sleepover at an old summer house near the ocean in Northern Norway. The bedroom was in the loft, at the end of a long hallway. Every night, just past midnight, Anneli would hear the sound of heavy footsteps slowly climbing the stairs. That night, she warned her friend what to expect—and sure enough, just after midnight, they both heard the footsteps approaching.Terrified, they scrambled to block the door with an old oak wardrobe."Help me move the cupboard—make a huge barricade, so he won’t enter!" Anneli cried.Then suddenly, the sounds stopped. Silence. Back to the song: although the lyrics were finished and the track had potential, Nils and Anneli weren’t convinced it was strong enough for the album, which would be their first as a duo. But their then-manager, Per Eirik Johansen, insisted—not only should they include it, but they should use the one-chord version. The rest is history. "Shimmering, Warm & Bright" became a major radio hit in Norway and marked the breakthrough that launched them into recognition in their home country. After Geir Jensen (aka Biosphere) left the band, Bel Canto evolved into much more of a live act. Their music became increasingly influenced by Eastern and Southern traditions. Andreas Eriksen—who also appears in the video—has been a long-time collaborator ever since.
