"Crown in the Closet" is track 3 from Marcus Said's self-titled debut album, Waiting Room Music. The title comes from a memory: Marcus's father kept his best coat in the closet, wrapped in plastic, waiting for an occasion worthy enough to wear it. That occasion never came. The coat stayed perfect. It was never lived in. This song is about the crowns we inherit that never get worn—the potential passed down through bloodlines that circumstances wouldn't let flourish. It's about taking that crown out of the closet, tarnish and all, and wearing it anyway. The Velvet Chop features two single-word samples: "Crown" in the intro and outro, and "Coast" in the final verse. Both sourced from the personal vinyl collection of his grandmother, Alberta Hayes. Produced by Premier. The Hammond B3 organ pad was recorded at St. Sabina Church in Chicago, where Marcus's grandmother sang in the choir for forty-three years. THE STORY BEHIND THE SONG: "My father never got to wear his crown. He spent his life protecting it, keeping it safe, waiting for the right moment. That moment never came. He ran out of time. So I took that crown out the closet. I don't keep it perfect. I keep it on. The tarnish ain't weakness—it's proof of the wear. It's proof I'm still here." — Marcus Said
