Video transcription: 15. Joint Replacement Surgery | Is Makoplasty different from other hip and knee replacement procedures? Dr. Gorczynski: Well, the concepts are basically the same. We are going to resurface the joint with a metal and plastic prosthesis. To do this traditionally, we make bony resections based off of a two-dimensional plan, and then balance soft tissues to accommodate that reconstruction. Using the Mako system we can have a precise three-dimensional plan before surgery. During surgery we can then balance the soft tissues before we even make a bony cut. That allows us to be extremely accurate with leg length and offset in the case of a total hip replacement, and soft tissue balance and alignment in total knee replacement. The robotic system allows us to adapt the reconstruction to the patient's unique anatomy, and we can do this within a millimeter and a degree of accuracy. There is less trauma during surgery to the patient's leg, Not having to put a rod inside the femur, we believe is a significant savings that creates less inflammation and less pain. Robotic joint replacement is a more precise way to do this with the anticipation of an easier rehab in a better long-term outcome.
