Uroliths (bladder stones) are a common occurrence in dogs and cats, along with some other animal species like guinea pigs! The symptoms of bladder stones are often very similar to urinary tract infections, like straining to urinate, frequent urination, and bloody urine. In many cases, the two go hand in hand, as some bacteria can cause stone formation and other times a stone can act as a nidus for infection. For any patient with recurrent urinary signs, a radiograph (x-ray) of the bladder should be considered! Otherwise, the stones may go undiagnosed and untreated causing repeated urinary symptoms, discomfort, and ultimately, costing the owner more money in the long run. If bladder stones are caught while they are still relatively small, they can be dissolved with prescription dog food! This doesn’t always work as some types of stones don’t dissolve, but it’s worth a try especially when owners are cost conscious or want to avoid surgery due to a patient’s age or comorbidities. I’m so glad this worked for this patient.
