If you're like a lot of us who like to fish, we don't always have the money to go buy everything we want. But occasionally we have time on our hands when the weather is no good for fishing. If you like to (or have to!) make a lot of your own fishing tackle and gear, this video is for you. If you're moderately skilled with your hands, have a few basic tools and some free time, you can make salmon spoons that are every bit as good, or better, than the ones you buy at the store for $10 apiece or more. You can make them just the way you want them for about $2 each in direct material costs. We're not talking about an initial investment in equipment, paints and tools, just the actual cost to make a spoon if you have the basics already. Keep in mind that you can do all this work manually like in the video and where you see us using the airbrush, just know that you can do those spots by dotting, just as shown in the second step. You don't need an airbrush setup. You can use rattle can clear coat as well. We used epoxy resin specifically to duplicate the original Cabelas spoon that is no longer made (for like 20 years!). Anyway, the client that asked us to reproduce this spoon is fairly desperate to get more. He told us he catches 90% of his fish in Lake Huron on this exact pattern. He wants it reproduced with complete fidelity. We think the spoon catches a lot of fish because of the different action it has once the thick clear coat is applied - it's heaver and the center of gravity shifts toward the back end, making a different kind of wobble and causing it to hunt a little. This particular one was prototype noumber 2 and was ultimately rejected because the Moon Jelly UV sticker is more blue than the original "Pearl UV" that is no longer made. So we're trying to duplicate it by other means and this didn't get it. That said, it's really neat looking and will 100% catch fish. It's going with us on the next trip and we'll see how it fishes. In the meantime, we hope you enjoy the video and get some value from it. Please let us know in the comments about any tips or tricks you have to make your own spoons. Tight lines, y'all...
