The Toughest Terrain South of the Scottish Highlands

The Rhinogydd are a range of mountains located east of Harlech in North Wales. The Rhinogydd derives from the names of two of the more famous peaks, Rhinog Fawr and Rhinog Fach, although the tallest mountain in the range is Y Llethr. Walking in the Rhinogs is for the more experienced walker. It is largely trackless and where there are paths, they are not of much use. Having the ability to use a map and compass is a must when walking this mountain range. For this visit to the Rhinogs, I set off from Cwm Bychan, where you are able to park in a camping field, providing you leave some change in the honesty box. From here, I walked the Roman Steps, then made an ascent to Rhinog Fawr, then on to Rhinog Fach, and I continued the walk from here on my second day. This was without a doubt some of the toughest walking I've ever done, but the rewards at the end of it were totally worth it.
