Growing Garlic From TRUE Seed

I only know this to be true for HARDNECK varieties of garic. The most common ways of propogating garlic is by planting individual cloves of garlic (broken off of a head of garlic) OR by letting the umbrels (what you might call the bloom of the garlic) at the end of the scape develop. Bulbils will develop at the end of the scape and these can be planted after a period of dormancy. However, both of these methods are asexual reproduction of the garlic. This is good for maintaining the same variety/cultivar of garlic. This can also be bad since pest, viruses, etc can develop after you have grown the same variety for several generations. You can get your garlic into sexual reproduction though! :) Carefully remove the bulbils from the umbrel and let the blooms develop. The blooms will develop small seed similar in size to onion seed (both of the allium family). Plant the seeds and you have your own variety of garlic!
