The Building of Skadar This ballad belongs to a cycle of epic poems concerned thematically with offering necessary human sacrifice to keep the building safe. This poem references historically known names, Vukasin and Uros Mrnjavcevic. Gojko Mrnjavcevic, the youngest brother in the poem, is not a historical figure. Historically, the two Mrnjavcevic brothers did not build the fortress town of Skadar. The fact that the folk singer had created the most positive and beloved brother, elevates the artistic nature of this poem and gives us more understanding of the principles of storytelling, high morality, and richness of folk imagination. In the poem, the building of Skadar is halted and cannot be continued. The mountain fairy informs the builders: that the construction of the Skadar fort cannot be completed until a woman is buried alive in the foundation.
