What to do if your ultrasound scan during pregnancy shows more fluid surrounding the growing baby? Polyhydramnios is a pregnancy complication characterized by excessive amniotic fluid surrounding your baby growing in the uterus. Most of the women with mild polyhydramnios experience no symptoms while moderate to severe increase in fluid can cause shortness of breath, larger than normal uterus and painful contractions. This can also mean problems for your baby growing inside; preterm birth, abnormal presentations, postpartum hemorrhage and more chances of cesarean section. Most of the patients with polyhydramnios have mild, idiopathic disease that does not require any active management .It is only in the few cases of severe polyhydramnios that amnioreduction and medical management may be required. So do not panic if you have Polyhydramnios!! Most cases of increased amniotic fluid are managed successfully with a safe delivery and healthy baby. Be aware and be safe.
