MANA TRIO performs Between the Garden and the Wilderness by ANDREW COTE

Between the Garden and the Wilderness was composed in 2017 by Andrew Cote and dedicated to the MANA Trio. The work was premiered at Boston Court in Pasadena, CA in the Spring of 2017. Between the Garden and the Wilderness was based on two years in history: 1802 and 1644. In 1802 Thomas Jefferson wrote the Danbury Baptist Association in Connecticut which made certain that no laws be made involving religion. In 1644 Roger Williams, the founder of the first Baptist Church in America, wrote that there should be a "hedge or wall of separation between the garden of the church and the wilderness of the world." "I used each of these years to make a pitch set (1802= Db, Ab, C, D) (1644=Db, Gb, Eb, Bb) which makes up the majority of the material in the composition.
