This video covers three days of sailing and testing Willow with my son on the Tamar River in Tasmania. Putting bilge keels on this traditional dinghy suited my purposes for a number of reasons but the outcome was difficult to predict. So far, I have found her very well balanced and sea kindly at all points of sail and for that I am pleased and very relieved. She stays on course easily and her pointing ability is better than I had hoped. She feels safe and secure even in blustery conditions. Most of all, it is very nice to be sailing again! The polytarp sail is holding up with no signs of deterioration. We have used it for twelve hours now and it is performing nicely and all the taped seams have remained perfectly intact with no lifting at all. The tarp material I used is just a medium weight (100g/m2) inexpensive one from a big hardware store in Australia. Usually on a boat the size of Willow, a sailmaker would use 4oz dacron which I believe is closer to 170g/m2, so the tarp I used was on the light side. Tarps seem to jump from medium to very heavy with nothing in between. Despite this, the sail I made is holding up well in winds up to 30km so far and I guess I will see how much more it can take. I will keep a record of its condition and longevity in the description of my polytarp sailmaking video. That way, anyone using the same materials and following my method of sailmaking can have an idea of what to expect. We had fun making and operating a 4.2m long boom to get some unique gopro footage. It is made from a repurposed aluminium antenna that had a speader attached to it to stiffen it up a little. In practice, it was vertically stable but still wobbled from side to side while we were sailing. We had to search for angles of sail that would allow it to be steady for long enough to grab some footage. Probably ninety per cent of the video we took was unusable for that reason. We did however, manage to capture some nice moments and I think I can fix the problems with it for another time. #dinghycruising #sailingdinghy #diysailboat Music used in this video: Outward bound - Headlund, https://www.epidemicsound.com/track/9...
