🎛️ Gear Shootout: Warm Audio WA-2A vs UA LA-2A Plug-in 🎙️ Hosted by Nathan Jackson | Filmed at MDC Music Studios, Toronto Welcome to another episode of Gear Shootout, the series where we compare some of the most iconic music equipment head-to-head to help you decide what’s right for your studio, stage, or sonic goals. In this episode, host Nathan Jackson dives deep into the world of optical compression, putting the Warm Audio WA-2A hardware unit up against the Universal Audio LA-2A plug-in. Both claim to deliver the lush, warm, and smooth compression made famous by the original Teletronix LA-2A, but how close do they actually come in terms of tone, feel, and performance? Let’s break it all down. 🕰️ A Quick History The original LA-2A, designed in the 1960s by Teletronix, has become a studio staple thanks to its rich, transparent optical compression—perfect for vocals, bass, guitars, and more. Known for its simplicity and musical response, it remains one of the most beloved compressors of all time. 🎚️ The Contenders: Warm Audio WA-2A: A modern analog recreation of the LA-2A, providing classic tone at a more accessible price point. Universal Audio LA-2A Plug-in: A digital emulation of the original hardware, available inside UA’s software ecosystem and usable across multiple DAWs. 🎵 What We Tested: Nathan used a professionally mixed track by Ruby Anderson (an MDC Music artist) titled “Dead Things”, to compare the WA-2A and LA-2A across multiple sound sources: 🎸 Bass 🎻 Acoustic & Chorus Guitars 🎤 Lead Vocals Each section was played through both the Warm Audio WA-2A and the UA LA-2A plug-in, starting with no peak reduction (just signal passing through) and gradually adding compression to highlight how each unit reacts dynamically. 🔍 What We Discovered: Gain Staging Differences Even with identical control settings, the hardware unit output was significantly hotter than the plug-in. It took about 15 dB less gain on the WA-2A to match the volume level of the UA plug-in. Sound Character – Instruments The UA plug-in exhibited a slightly softer attack, preserving transients with more subtle compression. The WA-2A hit harder on the transient—giving instruments a more rounded, vintage-analog compression feel. Sound Character – Vocals The WA-2A added a noticeable “buttery” warmth and smoothness to Ruby’s vocal performance. The UA plug-in maintained clarity and dynamics, sounding slightly more open but less colored. Workflow & Feel WA-2A delivers the tactile, analog experience with visual VU metering and physical knobs. UA plug-in offers portability, easy session recall, and convenience—perfect for remote or mobile production. 💡 Nathan’s Takeaway: Both units delivered beautiful, musical compression and sounded surprisingly close in tone. The hardware felt a bit more transparent and flattering on vocals, while the plug-in held its own beautifully across instruments. 🎧 “If you want the tactile experience and don’t mind the price and space—go for the WA-2A. If you want flexibility, mobility, and solid tone—the UA LA-2A plug-in is a powerful choice.” Ultimately, the LA-2A magic is alive and well in both forms—whether you’re twisting analog knobs or clicking with a mouse. 📢 Your Turn!
