Series-Parallel Wiring - Beefy Sounds for Tele & Strat!

The series wiring of single coil pickups is a great way to increase output level and get more bass and middle. There is a drop in treble output, but if you’re running through a distortion pedal, that will generate harmonics of its own (that’s effectively what distortion is), and thereby help the lack of highs. In this video, I describe and demonstrate what it can do to the sound of a Telecaster and a Stratocaster. My Telecaster has been modified using pull-out pot/switches, and these can be had for £10/$10. There is minimal wiring involved, and even a beginner level of soldering will allow this modification. I also have a phase-reverse switch, which is on the tone pot. The pots and switches have no electrical connection to each other - they just happen to be built together. My Stratocaster has been modified using normal toggle switches, as the control knobs on a Strat are tapered up to the middle, making them tricky to pull out. One can buy new control knobs like the Telecaster for example with its knurled metal knobs, or indeed modern Strat pots with buttons in the centre. My Strat has two switches, one for linking the outer two pickups together to get a Telecaster middle position sound, and also the series wiring, which offers many combinations - basically the neck pickup is wired in series with either the middle, bridge or middle-bridge pickups.
