Avevamo immaginato la città costiera come trampolino per esplorare il Parco Nazionale dell’Etosha a nord e le dune di Walvis Bay a sud — dove il deserto del Namib incontra l’oceano. Ma la realtà ci ferma: quell’area non è percorribile in bici, e per entrare nei grandi parchi namibiani serve un veicolo a motore. Un cambio di programma sgradito, ma inevitabile se vogliamo raggiungere le dune del Namib-Naukluft e l’incredibile Sandwich Harbour, una laguna sperduta tra sabbia e oceano. Noleggiamo un’auto per l’Etosha e organizziamo un rally off-road con un driver professionista che ci porterà fino alla costa selvaggia di Sandwich Harbour, tra fenicotteri e leoni marini. Il vento qui non dà tregua, e la Namibia — con la sua bellezza brutale — ci ricorda che non tutti i luoghi sono fatti per la bici. Davanti all’Atlantico, anche noi dobbiamo arrenderci… almeno per un momento. We thought this coastal city could be our perfect base to explore Etosha National Park to the north and the dunes of Walvis Bay to the south — where the Namib Desert meets the Atlantic Ocean. But reality strikes: the area isn’t bike-accessible, and entering Namibia’s major national parks requires a vehicle. It’s a disappointing change of plans, but a necessary one if we want to experience the giant dunes of the Namib-Naukluft and the breathtaking Sandwich Harbour — a lost lagoon between sand and sea. We rent a car for Etosha and join a professional off-road rally that takes us through the dunes all the way to Sandwich Harbour’s wild coast, home to flamingos and sea lions. Here, the Atlantic roars and the wind never rests — a reminder that not every place is made for bikes.
