In today’s video, we’re heading to the Cowichan Valley on southern Vancouver Island in British Columbia. I’ll share five fabulous things to do in the Cowichan Valley, including a 39-day music festival (the 39 Days of July), a sunset kayaking tour that includes seeing bioluminescent plankton, enjoying the valley’s many lakes and rivers, exploring stunning rail trails, and enjoying views from a giant spiral tower called the Malahat Skywalk. 🔔 If you enjoy this video, remember to give it a thumbs-up and subscribe to our channel! / @adventurespnw The Cowichan Valley is on southern Vancouver Island in British Columbia. It has a Mediterranean climate with mild winters, making it a great place for farming and outdoor recreation. If you’re visiting from the mainland, I’d recommend getting to Vancouver Island by taking the ferry from the Vancouver area to Swartz Bay. The route passes through the beautiful Gulf Islands, making the ferry ride itself a highlight of the trip. So, let’s dive into five fabulous things to do in the Cowichan Valley. The first is visiting the town of Duncan during the annual 39 Days of July music festival. Every day in July (and a few days in June and August), you’ll find live music all afternoon outside at the park in central Duncan. Duncan itself is a small, walkable town that’s renowned for its totem poles. More than 40 totem poles are distributed throughout town, and visiting them is a great way to explore town and learn more about the Cowichan culture. The next highlight for us was getting out on Cowichan Bay for a kayak tour that began at sunset and ended after dark. Night kayaking enables viewing of glowing, bioluminescent plankton in the summer. For more on the bioluminescence kayaking tour, check out our video here: • The Easy Way to See Bioluminescence in the... Number 3 is exploring the region’s many lakes and rivers. In summer, we easily found swimming spots with warm water and both rocky and sandy shores. These were the highlight of the trip for our Little Explorer! Number 4 is checking out the Cowichan Valley Trail, a long bike and pedestrian trail that links up with the Trans-Canada Trail. It features 8 railroad trestles, including the enormous Kinsol Trestle shown here. For more on the Kinsol Trestle, check out our video here: • Discover a Huge Railroad Trestle on a Top ... Number 5 is the Malahat Skywalk. Take an elevated “tree walk” through a forest of madrone and Douglas fir trees until you reach a spiral tower. Climb the tower to a panoramic viewpoint at the top. The adventurous among us can walk out over the “adventure net” and slide down the tower in a covered slide! For more on the Malahat Skywalk, check out our video here: • Discover the Malahat Skywalk, One of the T... Thanks for joining us in the Cowichan Valley! I won’t claim these are the top 5 things to do in the Cowichan Valley, because there is so much more to explore, but this was a great start for us in experiencing this beautiful place.
