Dan Appelquist co-chairs the World Wide Consortium Technical Architecture Group (W3C TAG), a collective that documents the architecture of the World Wide Web, while working to safeguard and extend it through coordination, collaboration, and review. In his talk, Dan will tell us about his group's recent efforts to develop ethical principles for the Web. He will describe their guiding ideals, including how the internet should be pro-social and open to all people, regardless of geographic boundaries. He will discuss how the web should support healthy debate and freedom of expression, utilizing verifiable data. And he will explain how the web's architecture should be transparent, environmentally sustainable, and above all, user-friendly.
