Why is science facing a research reproducibility crisis?

Why is science facing a research reproducibility crisis? [E Fernandez-Juricic] Different scientific disciplines have been recently challenged by failing to replicate key findings that have been considered foundational for decades. I will discuss some of the reasons behind this reproducibility crisis in science, including biases in the academic reward system and citation behavior, common practices in data processing, and experimental design and interpretation of statistical results, particularly from the perspective of animal behavior. The motivation to shift the research culture to make it more reproducible stems from increasing not only transparency between labs but also computational/statistical reproducibility within labs by embracing practices that save time and improve the quality of the research output. One of the challenges in moving to a more transparent research culture is a generational clash in which early career researchers are embracing open science practices at high rates but such efforts do not seem to be rewarded accordingly by promotion committees, funding bodies, journals editors/reviewers, etc. Some open science strategies to solve this challenge will be discussed.
