Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison asked Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill, who presided over the Derek Chauvin trial, to amend his sentencing guidelines. Ellison wants Cahill to correct the public record to “more accurately reflect the experiences” of the children impacted by George Floyd’s murder, and to discount the trauma they experienced. According to Minnesota law, the presumptive sentence of someone convicted of second-degree murder is 12.5 years, and it can be doubled due to aggravating factors. Attorney and legal analyst Monique Pressley and psychiatrist Dr. Janet Taylor, joined Nayyera Haq on “Making the Case” to discuss the aggravating factors and trauma.
