So the Red army dug in hard to defend, raising multiple armies worth of reserves and conscripts as well as moving troops from the Japanese frontier across the trans-Siberian railway to help defend. No expense was spared to stop the Nazis reaching the gates, hundreds of thousands of Russians gave their lives in defence of the ancient capital and several dams were deliberately destroyed to create artificial floods. The desperate defence created legends of heroes such as Panfilov's 28, and after two months of resisting attack, the Soviet counterattack came, sweeping back army group centre away from Moscow, an extent they would never reach again.
