BIOGRAFIA Slobodan Janković, detto Bòban, è stato un giocatore di basket serbo che ha militato dal 1980 al 1992 nel campionato jugoslavo, per poi trasferirsi in Grecia al Panionios Atene. Nato il 15 dicembre del 1963, il basket ha rappresentato sin da piccolo la sua grande passione. A circa 17 anni venne ingaggiato dalla Stella Rossa di Belgrado, iniziando la sua carriera da semi professionista. La sua vita cambiò per sempre il 28 aprile del 1993, mentre stava disputando un combattuto derby di playoff contro il Panathinaikos. La squadra di Slobodan era in vantaggio di 6 punti, a circa 8 minuti dalla fine del match, quando l’arbitro Stelios Koukoulekidis, fischiò al giocatore serbo il quinto fallo, che ne avrebbe decretato l’espulsione. Furioso per il fischio arbitrale, Jankovic si girò, e con una breve rincorsa diede volontariamente una testata alla base del canestro, come gesto di stizza. Nonostante la base in metallo del canestro fosse protetta da un materassino, il colpo subìto si rivelò drammatico per la vita e la carriera del giovane campione ventinovenne, che crollò sanguinante a terra, con una frattura alla terza vertebra cervicale, e una lesione del midollo spinale. A rendersi conto della gravità dell’incidente fu il medico della squadra intervenuto per soccorrerlo, quando sentì pronunciare a Slobodan la frase: “Non sento più le mie mani.” Slobodan rimase a lungo ricoverato in ospedale, con una diagnosi di tetraplegia che lo lasciò paralizzato per il resto della sua vita. All’epoca dell’incidente Slobodan era sposato ed aveva un figlio di appena tre anni, di nome Vladimir, oggi come il papà giocatore di basket. La moglie si separò da lui dopo l’incidente. BIOGRAPHY Slobodan Janković, known as Bòban, was a Serbian basketball player who played from 1980 to 1992 in the Yugoslav league, before moving to Panionios Athens in Greece. Born on 15 December 1963, basketball was his great passion from an early age. At around 17, he was signed by Red Star Belgrade, starting his career as a semi-professional. His life changed forever on 28 April 1993, while he was playing a hard-fought playoff derby against Panathinaikos. Slobodan's team was leading by 6 points, with about 8 minutes left in the match, when referee Stelios Koukoulekidis whistled the Serbian player for the fifth foul, which would have resulted in his expulsion. Furious at the referee's whistle, Jankovic turned, and with a short run-up voluntarily head-butted the base of the basket as a gesture of annoyance. Although the metal base of the basket was protected by a mat, the blow proved dramatic for the life and career of the young 29-year-old champion, who collapsed bleeding to the ground, with a fracture of the third cervical vertebra and a spinal cord injury. It was the team doctor who came to his aid who realised the severity of the accident when he heard Slobodan utter the words: "I can no longer feel my hands." Slobodan remained in hospital for a long time, with a diagnosis of quadriplegia that left him paralysed for the rest of his life. At the time of the accident, Slobodan was married and had a son just three years old, named Vladimir, now a basketball player like his father. His wife separated from him after the accident.
