Muzzleloader Myth Buster: Part 1, Can some muzzleloaders use smokeless powder safely? (A DVD is now available on eBay demonstrating Low Pressure Smokeless loads in a 50-caliber factory 209 muzzleloader.) "Low Pressure 50 Caliber Smokeless Loads in a 209 Factory Muzzleloader, 2 DVD set" During the last few years several YouTube videos have been produced in which fast-burning pistol powders were used to destroy the barrel of a muzzleloader. Why? Some people have made the claim that muzzleloaders can never use smokeless powder. Is this true, or is it a "Myth"? Has a new type of self-ejecting muzzleloader cartridge been invented which can produce safe pressures in factory 209-primered inline rifles? Does this eliminate the barrel corrosion that has destroyed many thousands of muzzleloaders? Do we need a new standard for modern muzzleloading rifles and the propellants and projectiles that make them work? A standard already exists for centerfire rifles and pistols, and shotguns. The 2nd edition of the Lyman Black Powder Handbook & Loading Manual lists pressures up to 33,500 psi on page 177 of this manual. This was in a 22-inch, 1-24 twist barrel loaded with a 400 grain bullet in a sabot and 120 grains of Pyrodex Select. This cartridge, like Blackhorn 209, is a substitute for black powder. The MSD sheet for Blackhorn 209 reveals it is 83% smokeless powder. (Nitrocellulose) https://blackhorn209.com/wp-content/u... This cartridge is also not 100% smokeless powder. It is less than 50% smokeless powder. This "self-ejecting" cartridge offers several important advantages over other products. It is non-corrosive, since it contains no corrosive oxidizers. It can be loaded by the manufacturer to produce whatever pressure is needed. The thin-walled metal cartridge provides a crush-proof structure to keep the volume constant with each shot. No more funnel needed. No more spilled powder. No more errors in measuring powder. The propellant cartridge and bullet/sabot are matched to work together safely.
