This study encompasses various articles and letters written by H. P. Blavatsky in the nineteenth century on the fundamental principles of spiritualism, occultism, and the Theosophical Society. The author examines the mediums of the time, contrasting ancient Eastern wisdom with modern scientific skepticism to explain the true nature behind spiritual phenomena. The texts address topics such as Tibetan mysteries, Vedic teachings, and Esoteric Buddhism, emphasizing the distinction between the reincarnated parts of the soul and its annihilated elements. Blavatsky criticizes dogmatic Christianity and materialistic science, offering Theosophy as an alternative, advocating for the universal brotherhood of humanity and exploring the hidden laws of nature. Furthermore, tracing esoteric history across a wide spectrum, from Freemasonry to ancient Peruvian ruins, she argues that truth can only be grasped through intuitive and spiritual development. Ultimately, these documents represent a profound and disciplined perspective of occult philosophy against the spiritual claims of the modern world. Based on the information in the texts, the fundamental differences that H. P. Blavatsky draws between Occultism (or Magic) and modern Spiritualism in her writings are as follows: 1. The Difference Between Will and Control The most significant difference is the control mechanism in the process. In Spiritualism, the medium is a passive, helpless instrument subject to the will of spirits or forces; this is described as "unconscious witchcraft." In contrast, Occultism (or Magic) is the science of knowing the hidden forces of nature and the laws governing the visible/invisible world. A Master (Adept) or Occultist is not controlled by spirits; rather, through the art of blending the laws of nature, they control spirits and forces with their own will. 2. The Nature of the Entities Communicated With Spiritualists believe that the entities that appear in séance rooms are the "true spirits" of the deceased. Occultists, however, argue that the true spirit leaves the earthly atmosphere after death and cannot return. According to occultists, the entities that mediums communicate with are mostly: • Elementaries: The "shells" or "astral corpses" of deceased individuals. These are entities left behind after the true soul departs, carrying fragments of personal consciousness and memory, but lacking true immortality. • Elementals: Nature spirits. These are semi-intelligent forces and can deceive the medium or participants by mirroring their thoughts. 3. Blind Faith Versus Science and Knowledge Occultism is a science based on the in-depth study of the hidden forces of nature; it is called the "Science of Sciences." The occultist produces or explains phenomena by learning cause-and-effect relationships and universal laws. Spiritualism, on the other hand, often takes an approach that is sometimes unemotional and uncritical, focusing only on the results (manifestations) of phenomena without understanding their causes. While Spiritualists attribute events to the intervention of "spirits," Occultists explain them through the laws of nature and the potential of human will. 4. Danger and Safety: Mediumship is seen as a dangerous and often deadly capacity. Mediums can fall under the influence of low-level entities (elementaries) and suffer moral and physical ruin. Occultism, however, is safer for the practitioner (Adept) because it is a discipline that recognizes and controls these forces; it does not surrender to spirits, but controls them. 5. Purpose and Method: Occultism aims to control the blind forces of nature (theurgy) and seek truth by using one's divine powers. Spiritualism, on the other hand, is generally limited to attempts to communicate with the dead and obtain physical manifestations (materializations); this is seen by occultists as the reduction and degradation of the soul to matter. In short, according to Blavatsky, Spiritualism is a state of passivity that is often misleading and dangerous, while Occultism is the conscious use of universal laws requiring knowledge, will, and active control.
