Located in the county of Oxfordshire, and around 15 miles north, and slightly east, of Oxford is the town of Bicester (rhymes with 'MISTER'). Geographically, Bicester is situated two miles northeast of a Roman fort known as Alchester (the Roman name is not known), around a crossroads between two Roman roads. At the southwestern end of the town is the Church of St Edburg. This dates back to the Norman era, with additions up to the 16th century and some 19th century restoration. The church is Grade I listed. From the late 12th century up until the Reformation, Bicester Priory was home to an Augustinian monastic establishment within the town. In 1239 a market charter was granted to Bicester by Henry III. Historic industries here have included wool, leather tanning and brewing. In 1850 the railway arrived in Bicester courtesy of the Buckinghamshire Railway. This was followed by another in 1910 which is today known as Bicester North, while the original is named Bicester Village after the outdoor shopping centre situated just next to it since its opening in 1995.
