What is Celiac Disease? | Doctor explains causes, symptoms, treatment and more...

In this video Dr O'Donovan explains key things you need to know about Celiac (Coeliac) Disease. Celiac Disease: Symptoms, Testing, Treatment & Research. Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder triggered by gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. When individuals with celiac disease ingest gluten, their immune system mistakenly attacks the small intestine, causing damage to the lining. This damage impairs the body's ability to absorb nutrients, leading to a range of symptoms. Symptoms of Celiac Disease: 1. Gastrointestinal: Diarrhea, abdominal pain, bloating, indigestion, constipation, and vomiting. 2. Extraintestinal: Fatigue, unexplained weight loss, anemia, osteoporosis, and skin rashes (dermatitis herptiformis). 3. Other: Mouth ulcers, stunted growth in children, and increased risk of other autoimmune diseases. Causes and Risk Factors for Celiac: Genetic Predisposition: Celiac disease is linked to specific genetic factors, making individuals more susceptible. Gluten Exposure: The primary trigger is exposure to gluten, particularly in individuals who have the genetic predisposition. Other Autoimmune Conditions: Individuals with other autoimmune diseases, such as type 1 diabetes and Hashimoto's thyroiditis, may be at an increased risk. How is Celiac disease diagnosed? 1. Blood Tests: Blood tests can help detect antibodies that indicate celiac disease. 2. Small Bowel Biopsy: A small bowel biopsy is often performed to confirm the diagnosis and assess the extent of intestinal damage. Treatment of celiac disease: Lifelong Gluten-Free Diet: The primary treatment for celiac disease is a strict, lifelong gluten-free diet. Dietary Counseling: A dietitian can provide guidance on how to manage a gluten-free diet and ensure adequate nutrient intake. Medication: In some cases, medications may be used to manage symptoms or address nutrient deficiencies. Complications associated with Celiac disease: Malabsorption: Damage to the small intestine can lead to poor nutrient absorption and malnutrition. Other Autoimmune Conditions: Celiac disease is associated with an increased risk of other autoimmune conditions. Increased Risk of Cancer: Untreated celiac disease can increase the risk of certain types of cancer. Important Note: Celiac disease is not the same as wheat allergy or non-celiac gluten sensitivity. Wheat allergy is an allergic reaction to wheat proteins, while non-celiac gluten sensitivity is a non-immune reaction to glute Content and timestamps: 00:00 Introduction 00:30 - What is Celiac disease? 02:35 - Symptoms and signs of Celiac disease 03:50 - Diagnosis of Celiac Disease 04:41 - Causes of Celiac disease 05:18 - Treatment of Celiac Disease *Website resources* My other video on Celiac disease testing:    • How to test for Celiac disease (Coeliac Di...   NHS UK information - https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/coeliac...
