Dr. Dan Ferreira discusses his work removing radioactive cesium from soils in Japan ten years after the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Disaster. On March 11, 2011, a massive earthquake and tsunami led to the explosion of three nuclear reactors at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. The explosions resulted in radioactive particles being released into the air, which eventually settled on neighboring soils. Dr. Ferreira has been working for half a decade to study these soils, including the bonds forged between these materials, the strength of those bonds, and, most importantly how to break them. In this episode of the Field, Lab, Earth podcast, Dr. Dan Ferreira discusses his work untangling radioactive cesium from Japanese soils.
