The most challenging part of this painting is the detailed Japanese-style tiled roof, with its layered structure and subtle light–shadow transitions. To bring this scene to life, I used several watercolor techniques: ✦ Lifting / Erasing to create highlights and tile textures ✦ Masking Fluid to preserve bright edges and eaves ✦ Dry Brush for the rough, textured surface of the roof ✦ Controlled Glazing for depth and balanced shadows ✦ Wet-on-wet for a soft sky and background transitions With these techniques combined, I aimed to express the quiet atmosphere of Shikina-en and the peaceful moments from my travel.
