RYEDALE PARISH #8: HARTON Harton – “Army Estate” Here’s a parish that’s got more than you might think. This is Harton, located just to the South and East of the A64. Its just South of Flaxton, and about 9 miles away from York, midway between that city and the town of Malton. This one should be prefaced with this fact. Harton was once a township in the parish of Bossall. As such, there is very little recorded history about the place itself, but this is made up for by the plethora of other features that lie outside the main village but still within the parish boundaries. These include Sandburn Hall, which is actually closer to Flaxton, a service area on the A64, and a pair of structures that greet you as you enter civilisation. Stick around until the end for those. Harton is currently a hotspot for construction traffic – not because its expanding with a housing estate, but rather because of the brand new 8 and half million pound Harton Reservoir Historic features within the village itself are limited to an old school and a 17th century manor house, based around a large green. There’s no church, no pub and no shop but that doesn’t mean Harton is uninteresting – far from it in fact. After having spent half an hour or so in its company, it can certainly be described as a desirable little hamlet.
