James Chen from Kordz talks about choosing the right HDMI cable for the job! With a current range comprising Standard, High Speed and Premium (18 Gbps) HDMI cables, which should you opt for to best suit the installation? With more and more 4K sources becoming available, as either devices (Blu-ray players, PlayStation, Xbox, etc.) or streaming services (Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Amazon Instant Video, etc.), the humble HDMI cable needs to transmit more and more data. It's all about bandwidth and that depends on image resolution, colour space and frame rate, as well as other capabilities such as HDR / extended-HDR, 3D, Ethernet data connection, etc. What about cable lengths? Premium (18 Gbps) HDMI cables can happily transmit 4K signals up to 30m (unpowered cables) and up to 100m for active cables, but keep cable lengths as short as you can to improve reliability. The longer the cable, the more noise and interference it is liable to pick up degrading the HDMI signal, however, HDMI cables are built to cope with this by using twisted pairs and an internal metal shell as shielding in their construction. In a rack environment, for example, you find considerable noise, so use the shortest cables you can in the installation. As HDMI cables are shielded they can be strapped together to keep the rack space tidy. Can you future-proof an installation? Not really, but 18 Gbps HDMI cables are certainly good enough for today's higher end sources. NOTE: "Full 4K" = 4K (3840 x 2160) / 60 Hz / 4:4:4 colour space Blu-ray = 4K (3840 x 2160) / 24 Hz / 4:2:0 colour space Fault finding tips: 1. Simplify! Ask yourself "Do I need 4K in all rooms?" and/or "Do I need so many devices on the system?" 2. Fully test a complicated system off-site before installing it.
