Tune in to a lecture-recital with the Trouvère Collective and hear the musical context of Thomas Becket's world. This specially commissioned event discusses the latest research on music composed in honour of Becket, giving sound to the emotional shock and grief felt by a nation at his murder in Canterbury Cathedral in 1170. Expert speakers, Professor Emma Dillon and Dr Katherine Emery, will introduce the music relating to Becket's death, its context and legacy. The Trouvère Collective, led by Matthew O’Keeffe, will also present a programme of mainly vocal music, filmed in the British Museum's Enlightenment gallery by Nick Harris. The Collective performs music including Anglia, planctus itera, lamenting Becket's death. Through other pieces, they explore how music recalls Becket's murder, how music helps to make a saint (Novus miles sequitur and Chant), and how it deepens devotion (the vernacular carol, St Thomas honour we). They conclude with William Byrd's deeply moving Posuerant. Each theme is related to specific objects in the exhibition. This event was filmed in compliance with the prevailing COVID regulations and guidance, 2021 More information about the performance can be found here: https://www.britishmuseum.org/sites/d...
