While our contributions have sometimes been overlooked or forgotten, Filipino Americans have been part of American history and American popular culture. The annexation of the Philippines by the United States was supposed to colonize us in their image, but instead we developed what Homi Bhabha calls “hybridity”: Many Pinays, Pinoys, and Pilipinx would excel at skills the U.S. valued (e.g., medical, military) and yet never leave behind our culture and our sense of family and community. From activism to athleticism to artistry, Trinidad Linares will discuss the gifts that Filipinx have bestowed upon America throughout the years. Trinidad Linares (M.A., Popular Culture) is the Area Chair for both Subculture and 9/11 in Popular Culture for the Midwest Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association Conference 2020. She is currently a Library Associate at the Music Library and the Bill Schurk Sound Archives at Bowling Green State University. She has an MA in Popular Culture (BGSU) and a BA in Biology and English (Rutgers University). EVENT DATE: OCTOBER 20, 2020 TIME: 5:00 PM EST
