100 Silences: 32 - Arundel St Nicholas

93 men of Arundel were lost in WW1. The town hosted a Red Cross hospital through which many men passed, leaving one way or the other. Silence No 32 of 100 Silences, a 3 week pilgrimage from Southampton to Dover, visiting 100 WW1 war memorials, to honour the centenary of Armistice (1918-2018). I recorded 1 minute's silence at each memorial. I also gave each memorial a pinch of soil, from Arras, Ypres and the Somme. Carrying this soil was massively heavy. Most British war memorials are empty, because in WW1 most bodies were buried overseas. It was War Office policy not to send bodies back to Britain. So this dust from the Western Front battle sites may be a few motes of the lads' actual physical bodies, brought home again. I also added a little Red Ochre from Wales, iron oxide used in ancient Britain for the burial of heroes (The Red Lady of Pavilland etc.). This is Silence no 32 of 100 Silences. May we find peace.
