A Silent Hill game set in 1960s Japan? How is this going to connect to the series? They have their work cut out for them. I wasn't familiar with Ryukishi07's work at the time, but I did read his past works leading up to the game's release. Which had me curious going into Silent Hill f. His writing can have great peaks with lingering lows. Could he make a concise horror story that played to his strengths? Or would some of his weaknesses prop up throughout? Like everything in Silent Hill f, it can be all over the place and a real mixed bag. Like it's bizarre combat system that's brimming with jank. When it clicks, there's some enjoyment to be had with it. There's some interesting ideas within its upgrade system and its resource management. But then the game makes some baffling decisions by throwing you into forced combat scenarios like there's no tomorrow. There's some bizarre puzzles here that evoke the Silent Hill of old. Ones that threw me for a loop, playing on the highest difficulty. And then you have the story itself. One that feels less like Konami hired Ryukishi07 to build a Silent Hill f story from the ground up. Instead, it feels like he pitched a story, and Konami decided to connect it to the world of Silent Hill. If they called the game, say, Kitsune when they cry, been its own IP, I'm sure it would've gone on to build a devoted audience. But that's not the case. This is a Silent Hill game, despite how you may feel about its connections to the series. And with that comes the issues with how Silent Hill f deviates from the series on several fronts. I can commend them for taking several risks across the board. It is the most interesting game in the series since Shattered Memories, or even as far back as Silent Hill 4. I'm curious how people will feel about Silent Hill f as the passage of time progresses. I don't foresee it being like a downpour or homecoming which are like farts in the wind. It's a polarizing game, that's for sure. I can see where both sides of coins are coming from when it comes to praises and criticisms. Which is why calling it a black sheep feels quite fitting for it. But in a different way than Silent Hill 4 as the black sheep of the series. Going into Silent Hill f, I had a few questions in the back of my mind: • How is this going to tie to Silent Hill as a whole? Is it going to feel like a Silent Hill game? • Is it going to be a case of it being a good game, but not a good Silent Hill game? Would it have been better off as its own IP? • Will the game play to Ryukishi07's writing strengths? • How is combat going to handle? Those previews looked janky, to say the least.
