In the previous video, we discussed how humans synthesize non-essential amino acids. In this video, we discuss the biochemistry relevant to protein digestion and absorption. The biochemical steps of HCl production by parietal cells in the stomach is explained step-by-step. We then explain the importance of HCl in protein unfolding and subsequent digestion by pepsin. We next discuss protein digestion in the intestine, eventually resulting in the formation of absorbable chemicals including amino acids, dipeptides and tripeptides. This is followed by a discussion on the various transport proteins found on the apical and basolateral membranes of intestinal cells, which transport neutral, basic and acidic amino acids and transport proteins for di- and tripeptides and absorption of intact proteins by neonates. The video ends with a discussion on how amino acids are transported in the bloodstream and clinical laboratory tests related to amino acids and proteins.
