Today’s Saturday Jam is my take on Merle Haggard’s “Going Where the Lonely Go,” a tune I’ve heard for a long time, but it never really clicked for me until I heard Robert Plant and Alison Krauss do it (aka, close to a chorus of angels in Heaven). I love Hag, but his 80s sound is just not for me. Some of the songs are strong enough, however, to withstand the treacle. Now this is all just my opinion, but the thing about “the Bakersfield sound” is that the longer it went on the more polished it became in spite of itself. Whoever introduced Waylon Jennings’ guitar player to an MXR Phase 90 in the 1970s has a lot to answer for, in my opinion (I say while running this Jazzmaster through a compressor, tremolo, delay, and reverb). While I love the early Bakersfield stuff, the later stuff is just as slick as the Nashville sound, no matter what they say. It’s like that scene scene in Star Wars episode 3 where Obi Wan tells Anakin “you’ve become the very thing you swore to destroy!” Yup, it’s just like that. Anyways, I hope you enjoy! And if you have always loved the Hag version, I hope I didn’t offend you with my sacrilegious thoughts on 1970s and 80s Bakersfield country. I enjoy it, too! Just not as much as late 60s and 70s stuff!
