Anatomy of the Human Nose: The nose is divided into two main parts: the external nose and the nasal cavity. 1. External Nose: The visible part on the face. Made up of bone (upper part), cartilage (lower part), skin, and muscles. Includes the nostrils (nares), which are the openings into the nasal cavity. 2. Nasal Cavity: A hollow space behind the nose, divided by the nasal septum (a wall of cartilage and bone). Lined with mucous membranes and cilia (tiny hair-like structures). Contains turbinates (conchae) – curved bones that increase surface area for warming and humidifying air. Openings to the paranasal sinuses and nasolacrimal duct (which drains tears from the eyes). --- Physiology of the Nose: The nose plays several vital roles: 1. Breathing: Acts as the primary airway for respiration. Filters, warms, and humidifies the air before it reaches the lungs. 2. Olfaction (Smell): The olfactory epithelium, located at the roof of the nasal cavity, contains receptors for smell. These receptors send signals to the brain to identify different odors. 3. Protection: Nose hairs and mucus trap dust, pathogens, and other particles. Sneezing expels irritants from the nasal passages. 4.
