"Redesign our time," (2019) by Molly Joyce (https://mollyjoycemusic.com) Molly Netter, voice Ezra Seltzer, cello JIJI, guitar Performed at St. Paul's Chapel in NYC, March 8th, 2019 *** Text by Jacqueline Suskin: "give us new purpose redesign our time switch the violent cycle and the sequence of our aim now focus has new pull nothing can ever be the same give us new purpose redesign our time with the work of our hands crafting thread by thread we reshape our lands balanced voice of heart and head give us new purpose redesign our time rebel against the fight recreate the rigid pattern conjure up what’s right remind us that we matter give us redesign our time give us redesign our time" *** This arrangement was commissioned by Trinity Wall Street Church in Manhattan for a concert titled "Lagrime Mie," curated by Melissa Baker and Molly Netter: "Lagrime Mie" explores the female perspective in composition, particularly the raw evocation of emotion heard in the music of the famous baroque artist Barbara Strozzi, who broke through gender barriers to become the most successful composer of secular vocal music in Venice in her time. Works by Strozzi and several of her contemporaries are paired with world premieres of Trinity-commissioned works focusing on empowering female voices. *** Program notes from composer Molly Joyce: "Redesign Our Time was commissioned by The Canales Project’s Hear Her Song initiative, which honors distinguished women leaders through new songs inspired by their words, written by female composers. The song was commissioned in partnership with Vital Voices, honoring Ariela Suster of the Sequence Collection, and her words set to poetry by Jacqueline Suskin. With the song, I aimed to create a sense of honor and dignity while at the same time suggesting the ideal of hope and the importance of looking forward, as we redesign our time for current and future generations to come. I have always wanted to contribute to women’s rights and equity, however never found the appropriate opportunity to do so organically and authentically. Thus the opportunity to write a song in honor of Suster for Vital Voices’ 20th Anniversary and in collaboration with The Canales Project was a fitting platform. Furthermore, I am very excited and honored to have arranged the song for soprano Molly Netter and guitarist Jiji Kim, two musicians I have long admired for their singular musicality and sensitivity, and writing for both in a concert arranged by the exceptional Trinity Wall Street is truly a dream come true."
