Performed by ROS Singers and guest community singers at ROOTS, YST Concert Hall, 10 Sept 2023 Sounds of Nanyang weaves together two ever-recognisable tunes in pentatonic scale that is popularly associated with Chinese music. 茉莉花 Mō Lì Huā (Jasmine Flower) has two versions, a Jiangnan version that was used in Puccini’s Turandot, and a more florid Jiansu version that we hear in the second verse. It speaks of the jasmine flower that exudes an alluring fragrance and beauty. Dayong Sampan (Row Your Boat) is popular in all of the Malay-speaking region, and has been successfully adapted into Teresa Teng's Tián Mì Mì (甜蜜蜜 ). The word “sampan” means “boat” in Malay but finds origin in the Cantonese words “sāam báan” that refer to the “three planks” of wood that would have been used to build the boat. This song narrates the journey of immigrants traversing the South Seas (Nanyang), from China to Singapore in junk ships that would have been larger and winged with three sails. In this arrangement, we hear the depiction of choppy seas that the immigrants would have battled before arriving on Singapore’s shores, represented by the broadened section superimposing the two folksongs. www.resonanceofsg.com/upcoming
