He shaped the sound of modern reggae and worked with global icons across genres. He was born 10 May 1952, Kingston, Jamaica and died 26 January 2026, Kingston, Jamaica. Sly formed a rhythm section with bassist Robbie Shakespeare, becoming one of the most influential production duos in reggae. Their sound defined roots reggae in the 1970s and helped shape the digital dancehall revolution in the 1980s. Sly & Robbie worked on thousands of recordings, contributing to music by Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Black Uhuru, Grace Jones, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan. Serge Gainsbourg and many more. Sly is known for a deep, steady, “sleeper” drum groove that became a hallmark of reggae. He helped introduce drum machines and digital rhythms into Jamaican music, influencing dancehall and later global pop. His work continues to shape reggae, dub, pop, and electronic music. Tributes from artists worldwide praised his creativity, warmth, and enormous impact.
