The 1988 Camel Trophy was held on the wild Indonesian island of Sulawasi, which offers a route guaranteed to try men and vehicles as never before. Teams covered thirteen hundred spine-jolitng miles over wild terrain, some of which had never been traversed by vehicle before. Of the hundreds of thousands of hopefuls who apply for selection as entrants, only 2 per cent qualify. Britain’s hopefuls Marc Day and Jim Benson were selected fron a 51-strong contingent representing finalists from 12 countries who spent a gruelling three days at a training and assessment course at Eastnor in the UK.
