On Translation, Bridges and Collaboration: Working with Latin American Indigenous Languages

This is a recording of a panel that took place at the London Book Fair, on 19 April 2023. It was chaired by Dr Cecilia Rossi alongside panellists Arthur Malcolm Dixon, Prof. Verónica Gómez and Silvina López Medín. Despite the current growing numbers of Latin American writers writing in indigenous languages, very little gets translated into English, and what is translated is often done from Spanish versions by the writers themselves. These versions are often called ‘bridge translations’, a phrase that can be problematic as it ‘reinforces the fantasy of the transparent access to the source text’ (Collins and Calleja 2020). Can we talk about collaboration and interaction and use ‘bridge’ for what the term means: a structure that will connect two places – or cultures and is aimed at (to quote Collins and Calleja once more) ‘build[ing] long-term relationships with those writers and cultures’? The panel will address different forms of collaboration and the possible ways in which translators and publishers can facilitate them, and in this way contribute to the revitalisation of indigenous languages.
